The ethtool ABI specifies that the reset operation should only clear the flags that were actually reset. Setting the flags to zero after a chip reset violates this because it does not include resetting the application processor complex. Similarly, components that are not yet defined are also not necessarily being reset. The fact that chip reset does not cover the AP also means that it is inappropriate to treat these two components exclusively of one another. The ABI provides a mechanism to report a failure to reset independent components via the returned bitmask, so it is also wrong to fail hard if one of a set of independent resets is not possible. It is incorrect to rely on the passed by reference flags in bnxt_reset(), which are being updated as components are reset. The initially requested value should be used instead so that hard errors do not propagate if any earlier components could have been reset successfully. Note, AP and chip resets are global in nature. Linux kernel

There are several guides for kernel developers and users. These guides can
be rendered in a number of formats, like HTML and PDF. Please read
Documentation/admin-guide/README.rst first.
In order to build the documentation, use ``make htmldocs`` or
``make pdfdocs``. The formatted documentation can also be read online at:
https://www.kernel.org/doc/html/latest/
There are various text files in the Documentation/ subdirectory,
several of them using the Restructured Text markup notation.
Please read the Documentation/process/changes.rst file, as it contains the
requirements for building and running the kernel, and information about
the problems which may result by upgrading your kernel.
